Organiser's Comments

First of all, thanks to everyone who came along despite early-morning weather which was far from encouraging. I trust those of you who did not complete your course were not too disappointed. TAY would appreciate feedback from all on what was a variation on previous Long O events we have held - see later.

As anyone who has planned a Long O realises, a lot of time goes into it so it was particularly galling when I realised I had made an error in the medium course. Apologies to those affected. I have credited times with the number of minutes you said were lost checking the control id (but this did not change any actual positions).

In the short course, Davie Frame, despite concerns at the start with a sore calf muscle, put in a consistent performance with split times which were either the quickest or close to the quickest, with the only problem that he managed to sprain his ankle leaving the penultimate control - his calf was ok. Mike Stewart of ESOC followed him in - two M50's putting in excellent performances.

In the medium course it was very close, but Jason Falconer's faster time on the fifth leg gave him the edge over TAY's Grahame Nicoll.

On the long course, leaving the 7th control, Malcolm McMillan was just 32 seconds ahead of Duncan Grassie, but then Duncan decided he was running late for an appointment and missed out the last two controls, so a nail-biting finish was not to be. Kyle Heron of FVO produced an excellent run over a testing course to come in a very good second.

So in terms of future events, we are thinking of some improvements and thoughts are that next year we may use the same location but reduce the length of the courses to 9kms, 12kms and 15kms. There will be an increased focus on runnability. On the day there was significantly longer grass than when I planned the courses in June, so we may bring the event forward (but not to clash with ESOC's Long O) – it has to be earlier or later because of the 6-Days. Also we will design courses so there is a greater proportion of paths, trods and runnable grass (though talking to Davie Frame and others, runnability was generally thought to be good).

Any feedback and suggestions will be appreciated. If we may, we will retain your email addresses so we can email you next year – but let me know if you wish your address to be removed.
