Professor Annalu Waller
Computing - Queen Mother Building
University of Dundee
I have worked in the field of Augmentative and Alternate Communication (AAC) since 1985, designing communication systems for and with non-speaking individuals. My primary research areas are human computer interaction, natural language processing, personal narrative and assistive technology. In particular, I focus on empowering end users, including disabled adults and children, by involving them in the design and use of technology.
I lead the AAC Research Group which seeks to develop technology with and for people with limited or no speech, and I manage a consultancy called Human Centred Computing Consultancy (HC3) which provides usability audits of websites and technology.
My teaching is research-led and includes modules on HCI and Usability, Technology Innovation, Assistive Technology and AAC. I also teach communication skills to healthcare students and professionals and co-direct an MSc in AAC with the School of Psychology.
