Where do our graduates go?
Some of our graduates have provided the following information about what they are doing now ...
Ellen Moar, BSc Hons Applied Computing (0)
Flex Developer, INPS, Dundee
The Applied Computing degree was really fun. A large range of topics were covered, as I got into the final months, I felt I was well prepared to enter the real world and I landed my dream job before I even finished the course. The atmosphere was also fantastic, with the lecturers helpful and the labs being an enjoyable place to work.
Wynne Carter, MSc by Research (Programming Systems for Monitoring and Collection of Clinical Data) (1969) , PhD Computers in the Medical Environment (1977)
Director, Computing and Media Services, Medical School, University of Dundee, Dundee
I took my BSc in Dundee whilst it was Queen's College of St. Andrews. Then as a member of staff I first completed an MSc from Dundee in 1969 entitled " Programming Systems for Monitoring and Collection of Clinical Data", followed in 1977 by a PhD from Dundee entitled "Computers in the Medical Environment". I have been developing systems for routine service use in the NHS for most of my career as director of a medical computing department in the university. This department is now called Computing and Media Services (CAMS). As well as providing a variety of services, and providing consultancy, we still develop systems particularly now in support of teaching and learning in the Medical School.
John Groarke, BSc Computational Science & Statistics (1971)
Principal, JEGMC Strategy Consulting (www.jegmc.com), Sydney, Australia
After graduation I completed a post-graduate Diploma in Computing Science at Glasgow University. Being unable to land a job in the ‘labs’ of IBM or ICL, I entered the corporate world and worked my way up from graduate Computer Programmer through DP Manager to Group Management Services Manager (responsible for IT, O&M, Statistics & OR services) in a group of manufacturing companies. During the last two years of that role I became more consultative in my approach and subsequently made the transition to Internal IT Consultant with another manufacturing group. I subsequently made the ultimate transition to (External) IT Management Consultant with Grant Thornton, then as my own firm (I developed the IT strategy for the 1990 World Student Games in Sheffield for instance) in the UK. In 1990 I migrated to Australia to join Price Waterhouse Urwick, the management consulting arm of PW, which subsequently became PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting after the merger with C&L and then IBM Business Consulting Services after the takeover by IBM. I currently run my own management consulting firm advising - professional services firms on how to become more profitable, corporate clients on how to develop IT strategies, and individuals on how to develop and pursue a career, and perhaps their own business, as a management consultant. I do some part-time teaching for the University of Sydney on this last service. The Dundee experience was a very rewarding one and rounded off my first forays into computer programming – 1966 at school, and 1967 at a Cambridge University summer school! I am sure that the knowledge gained, and the disciplines learned for study and research, greatly helped my accomplishments over the years. If any graduate is thinking of re-locating ‘down under’, or is already here and would like to network, then please feel free to contact me j.groarke@activ.com.au
Moira Norrie, BSc Mathematics and Computational Science (1975)
Professor of Computer Science, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Michalis Pirillos, MSc Computer Science (1985)
Software Engineer (Assistant Department Manager), Cyprus Tecommunications, Nicosia, Cyprus
I organise business meetings to select new requirements from users., and manage the preliminary analysis business needs and prepare the necessary documentation required. I help users in their effort to find solutions either by developing new applications from our Informatics Department or buy software. I also study new methods of software development and help with their implementation. I manage the implementation of new hardware systems and help with the management of the maintenance of applications either developed in house or supplied. The knowledge I gained at the University of Dundee is priceless. When I left Cyprus for Dundee I was afraid that I was going to pass a very difficult and cold time but I was mistaken. I enjoyed every single day of my stay at Belmont Hall. I met excellent people and I learned many useful things which still help me either to find a solution to a business problem or to work with people. When I meet teenagers here in Cyprus and the discussion is about studies I tell them how interesting it is to study in Dundee and how valuable it is to hold a degree from Dundee University.

In my job I teach subjects such as: Pascal Programming, HTML, networks, databases (MS Access), word processing, spreadsheets, multimedia (photoshop, authorware, director, soundforge), unix operating system (linux red hat 9) and maintenance of a personal PC. The course I followed at Dundee University was very demanding and I had to work hard, but I acquired the skills I needed to do my job successfully and to explore the world of computing further on my own. All my lecturers were available and helpful when it was needed, especially Dr Ricketts with whom i did my thesis ("Morphological operations used to enhance NMR bone images") and Professor Morris who taught the graphics cource which i enjoyed a lot. When I came back to Greece, I found a job within a week in company dealing with multimedia projects and so far I have always had work. I was very pleased with Dundee University and its attitude towards the students. The staff there made you feel welcome, helped you to build up confidence and helped you to become competent.

I research emerging software trends that might be used by or disrupt the business of NCR Financial Solutions Group. This ranges from Open Source Software, through Service Oriented Architectures through to Software Agents
Alison Longhorn, BSc Computer Science (1995)
Senior Analyst Programmer, Technology One Ltd, Brisbane, Australia
I am currently working for a software-house based in Brisbane and with offices around the world, producing software packages within the following market areas: financial management, student administration, local government administration, HR & payroll, point-of-sale, supply chain management, asset management as well as ad-hoc project services. Primarily I develop and support software for a local government administration package using the latest programming technologies. Our projects incorporate the full development life cycle: from initial requirements specifications through feasibility, resource allocation, construction, testing, documentation, hand-over and finally support. As a senior member of the team, my duties also include project management, graduate mentoring and staff reward programs – we will soon be completing a major project that has seen the whole team putting in a lot of hard work and as a reward the company has organized a day-trip to a nearby tropical island resort (activities will include off-road safari, beach volley-ball, banana-boat rides, beach BBQ and a lot of sitting under palm trees relaxing with a glass of something cold). My time at Dundee University was very enjoyable and memorable. I made a lot of friends (many of which I still keep in close contact – even from 12,000 miles away!). Being able to start my degree with additional subjects before focusing on computer science, gave me a great introduction to Uni life. The facilities at DU are fantastic and the location suited me perfectly – not as busy or expensive as Edinburgh and Glasgow, but still central to Scotland. As a University city, Dundee has a lot to offer and I thoroughly enjoyed making it my home while at Uni. I met my husband in the third year of my degree, and we’re now living our dream together in this tropical paradise.
John Ramsay, BSc Computer Science (1995)
Writer / Database Administrator (DBA), Currently writing, previously Mondial Assistance, Brisbane, Australia
As a DBA, I plan the strategy for installing and maintaining corporate Very Large Databases (VLDBs). Large organisations can’t operate without reliable access to accurate information, and a DBA must ensure that initially, and over time, these databases are available, secure, and providing corporate decision makers with accurate information. The DBA chooses the hardware (in conjunction with server personnel and within budgetary constraints), installs the Oracle database software, creates the database to industry recognised standards, sets up user accounts, implements the security policy, makes sure there’s enough space for the database to expand into (by the way, in the real world, there’s no such thing as an entity life history . . . everything lives forever. Disk is cheap, after all ;-?) My time at Dundee University was very enjoyable. The staff were first class, the facilities were good and the location suited me because it was central to the rest of Scotland. I was invited to take a place on the third year of the honours programme, having come through Perth College’s HND in Computing course. I found that that flexibility worked well for me and gave me a four-year degree which focused entirely on computing, as opposed to spending the first two years studying psychology or geography too. The student facilities were also very good, and I picked up a very nice wife from one of the computer labs. Surprisingly, she’s still with me, which is always a bonus.
Brian Armour, MSc Computer Science (1995)
Project Manager, CC Technology Ltd (www.cctechnology.biz), Glasgow
Whilst studying for my Physics degree at Strathclyde University I realised that computing was where I wanted to work. After graduating I discovered that Dundee University offered a course for graduates of other disciplines to 'convert' their skills to IT. Ideal. The course was good, very practical and time flew by. On graduation I found work with the WM Company in Edinburgh as a trainee programmer along with 40 other graduates hired to double the size of the development department at the start of what would become one of the UK's largest client server development programmes. Having gained exposure to a wide variety of programming and implementation issues within a large company I brought my new skills to a smaller consultancy, CC Technology, where we delivery software solutions to range of enterprising organisations across the public and private sector. Although now managing projects rather than developing, the variety of projects from delivering websites to record labels using the latest web and DRM technologies, through to web based corporate applications keeps life interesting, and although a cliche, no two days the same.
Rod McCall, BSc Accountancy and Computer Science (1996)
ERCIM Research Fellow, Fraunhofer FIT, Germany
I am currently working in areas related to pervasive gaming and mixed reality, although until quite recently I worked on a project to develop ambient displays of collaborative work. Both research areas are part of my current job. Previously I was doing the same job at CRP- Gabriel Lippmann, Luxembourg. During my time at Dundee I learned the art of how to drink on a budget, but also it was while studying computing at Dundee that I developed an interest for areas related to my work.
David Brown, BSc Computer Science (1996)
Senior Consultant (Media), Siemens Business Services, London
I am a senior consultant working in the Siemens media practice as general manager of enterprise architecture on new media & broadcast digitisation projects. I am currently working within the Siemens PMO at the South African Broadcast Corporation in Johannesburg, South Africa where together with senior management I oversee all aspects of major IT initiatives.
Gordon Milligan, BSc Computer Science (1996)
Tools Software Engineer, Real Time Worlds, Dundee
I develop software that aids in the development of next generation 3D video games. I build content pipelines, amongst many other things, for taking art assets and converting these into a compact form, in an efficient and user friendly manner, that can be used in game. Being Dundonian, I decided to remain in Dundee for study as I liked growing up in Dundee and the University had a very good reputation especially for computing. I found the University to have a great Union - one of the best - with a good atmosphere. I made many great friends during my four years, many of whom I am still in regular contact.
Andrew Patterson, MSc Computing and Information Technology (1996)
Software Developer, Open Microscopy Environment, Division of Gene Regulation and Expression, University of Dundee, Dundee
My MSc project on 3d Graphics software, working with the Electronic Imaging Department, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design lead directly to my first job with DMA Design working on graphics tools for computer games. As part of the tools department we provided a range of applications to support the artists and game developers including multilingual installers. I must be one of the few people in the UK with a copy of Grant Theft Auto in Japanese. Working with complex script languages led to me moving to Insights Learning and Development to internationalize their personality profiling software as they expanded there global business. Over the years we produced offerings in 26 languages. I am now working as a data model and documentation specilist for the Open Microscopy Environment as part of The Swedlow Lab, Division of Gene Regulation and Expression, University of Dundee. I will be working with the main development team to manage the OME-XML data model and providing validators, sample code and support to external developers as we push to get the OME format adopted as the common standard for image interchange between microscope suppliers and analysis application vendors. So I am still playing with images

Like most people at Microsoft I’ve worn many hats during my time here. For the last two years however I’ve been responsible for all project management and development for Microsoft Small Business Worldwide. My experience at Dundee was a huge bonus to my career as an IT professional; I left University not only with the skills I needed to understand complex Computing and Programming problems, but also with a foundation of basic business acumen that has helped me to excel alongside some of the sharpest minds in the industry.
Iain Kenney, BSc Computer Science (1997)
World Wide Product Manager, SMC Networks, Wokingham, Berkshire
My current role is World Wide Product Manager for Ethernet Switch products. In basic terms this means I have to work with R&D to define and develop products as well as working with Sales and direct to end customers to present our products and solutions. So an average day is very varied often involving world wide travel to visit the different offices and territories. My time at Dundee really helped me to be ready for working in the "real world". Whether that be from technical problem solving to presentation skills to user interface design ideas. It is clear that technology keeps evolving but the principles remain.
Alistair Milne, BSc Computer Science (1997)
Lead Audio Programmer, Electronic Arts, Montréal, Canada
After graduating from Dundee University I got into the computer games industry, and eventually specialised in audio programming. At its simplest, audio programming involves writing the code that plays sound effects when things happen during a game. There's a lot more to it than that, of course! Over the years I have earned several awards including two BAFTAs for the audio in games I worked on. After working for 9 years in London and Paris, I'm now relocating to Montréal to work on the Next Big Thing (tm).

Since graduating I have worked on short-term projects mainly in the voluntary and charity sector. I am currenlty self-employed and my consultancy work is delivering a Training Strategy for Violence against Women. I am also member of the Association of Adult Literacy Practicioners (my expertise in this field is the use of ITC and non-paper based resources for use in Adult Literacies). I took the conversion course as I had an art based degree M.A.(Hons) Scottish History. I was also a mature student which has its own dimensions! However with great support from the tutors and admin staff, I acheived my qualification and I also gained a lifelong love of computers.
Simon Bennett, BSc Applied Computing (1998)
Senior Information Security Specialist, Information & Communication Services, University of Dundee, Dundee
I am responsible for IT Security within the University as well as ensuring integrity and availability of the network and related components. In other words configuring Firewalls/Routers/Switches, dealing with security breaches, imparting information about security best practices, monitoring network switches/routers/firewalls/traffic, configuring wireless infrastructure, configuring content switches etc... I initially came to do BSc Computing and Cognitive Science, which meant having to do both Psychology and Philosophy in year one and two of the degree. However that was dropped after a somewhat exuberant first year to concentrate on my Computing degree. 2nd year was also slightly too much fun, but I managed to pass my exams nonetheless, the learning was concentrated on C++/Solaris/Project Management and Object Oriented Design amongst others (if I remember correctly). I'm sure the third year was harder, I recall that my main nemesis was networking. This was to be my last year of uni as I decided that I was too skint and what difference was an honours going to make anyway - turns out an honours is absolutely crucial if you want to go further in academia. Oh well I had a good time and learnt a lot!
David Browning, BSc Computer Science (1998)
Computing Teacher - Secondary, Hamilton College, Hamilton, Scotland Hamilton, Scotland
I am a Computing Teacher in a secondary school in Hamilton. It's a great job and I love working with the kids and being involved in all the things that go on in a school. Technical Program Manager, Business.com, Santa Monica, California, USA
I’m a technical P.M for a business to business company and oversee the implementation of our API as well as running our Search engine marketing optimization tools and strategic email systems. Before coming to sunny California, I was a developer and PM up at Microsoft Games Studios in Seattle, which was nice! Current job isn’t as glamorous but is equally, if not more rewarding and I do get to live next to the beach. Needless to say that without my time in Dundee Uni, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Not only did the Msc put give me an excellent grounding for all my job experiences but the quality and reputation of the program and the University enabled me to obtain the visas/green card I required for working in the States. I owe a lot to the Computing Science department and its great team and I only wish I lived closer so I could take them all out for the legendary “Sausage and Chips” student special lunch from the Globe.. which is an excellent bar…not that I would condone students drinking because that’s just unheard of. **grinz**

Douglas Silverstone, BSc Applied Computing (2001)
IT Business Analyst, Citizens Advice Bureau (www.citizensadvice.org.uk), London
You may need some advice about a legal problem, perhaps you have an issue with housing or you may even want some information about student loans. If you do you could go to a CAB to find out more. If you did you would probably be getting the information from one of the systems I am responsible for. This includes the central information system which is used in over 800 bureaus to give Advice to people in your community. On a day to day basis I might be defining new system requirements, examining business protocols, selecting vendors, or any number of tasks which are involved in the role out of new application developments. It's a job where I have a free role to work out new beneficial developments and see them through from there inception right through to implementation. It is a really great job made all the better by the ability to see the benefit that are achieved by the IT Systems. If you do need some advice about something, a good place to start is http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/ for an example of an award winning accessible website. I had a great time at Dundee University, made all the better my the atmosphere that is created by the university and its Students. Its fair to say that the degree definitely helped develop some of the skills that I use throughout my career, for example Dundee University was a leading light in the area of web site accessibility which is now a key requirement for all citizens Advice web sites. Being Dyslexic I found that the support given to me by the university was amazing and undoubtedly helped me achieved the results I eventually did. The Students Union was quite good fun too!

Rob Sharp, BSc Hons Applied Computing and Digital Microelectronics (2001)
Software Engineer, Media Platform, Yahoo!, Sydney
What I do: I'm an engineer for Yahoo! media platforms, involved in developing systems for processing digital content, such as streaming video and audio, along with building user tools for editors to manage that content. My time at SoC: Applied Computing gave me fantastically broad palette of knowledge, ranging from data processing algorithms, design patterns and usability, and also learning from the industry via Hot Topics. The department is a great community, and is tremendously close to the students union, which was always a lovely way to unwind after a hard days lectures!
Soeren Bluhm, BSc Applied Computing (2002)
MBA Student, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark
John-Orr Hanna, BSc Applied Computing (2002) , MSc Animation and Visualisation (2003)
Management Consultant, PA Consulting Group, London
I currently work for a global management consultancy, with its head offices in Victoria, London UK. I currently specialise in commercial contracting arrangements for strategic partnering. I have worked both in the public and private sector; predominantly in communication systems, most recently for a major European Mobile Phone Operator. In previous positions I have worked for one of the five largest IT Services companies in the world, I have developed rapid POC (Proof Of Concept) experimentation solutions, to investigate and develop current customer business processes and streamline the associated human workflow approaches. (specialising in system integration and system engineering) The results of these investigations have been deployed across Europe, the US and are currently being introduced to Australia. I have worked in both technical delivery and project management capacities. On leaving university and entering industry I was quick to realise the importance of having a broad depth of computing experience, hence the "applied" aspect of the degree. Some of the most important skills that I developed were around project management and general team working. A number of people that I began industry with were challenged with the social aspects of the work place and the need to be able to jointly solve problems with new and diverse people. This was actively encouraged by the department at all points in my university life and the skills developed proved invaluable on a day to day basis. [The odd pint also did wonders for team building]
Derek Jack, BSc Applied Computing (2002)
Project Leader, Halifax Bank of Scotland, Halifax, West Yorkshire
Within my job, I am responsible for leading a team of developers and analysts to deliver mortgage related IT projects. While at Dundee University, I had a thouroughly enjoyable and challenging time obtaining my degree while making the most of the socialable side of being at University. This included some good times at the Globe with the Computing Society. Through progressing through the degree, I learned which skills and areas I was stronger in, which allowed me to target the type of job that that best suited me.
Iain Kay, BSc Applied Computing (2002)
Support Transition Manager, LogicaCMG, Aberdeen
I'm in a new role with LogicaCMG where I'm currently managing the transition of a global project from development to release for Shell. This involves ensuring the knowledge required to release and support the application has been properly gathered, as well as arranging all the necessary service level agreements, out of hours support and agreements with third party vendors. I've previously headed up teams on various development projects, and served my dues as a coder and support analyst. My time at Dundee University was a fantastic experience that provided me with a technical computing base which I still rely on to this day - along with a fiancee and a desire to never again drink a quadruple aftershock.
Mike McKeown, BSc Applied Computing (2002)
Systems Developer, Standard Life Assurance Limited, Edinburgh
Most of my time is spent developing banking systems or analysing existing systems and producing design documents for others to follow. This can be anything from a calculation service to work out how much standard life are willing to lend people for a mortgage to a calling system with voice recognition. The technologies involved vary from COBOL (yes people still use it) up to J2EE / C# front-end presentation layer software.
Alan North, BSc Applied Computing (2002)
Currently Travelling, ,
After graduating from the department, I worked as a game designer at two Dundee-based videogame companies; Vis Entertainment "NARC" and Real Time Worlds "Crackdown". The department's focus on design methodology and usability has proven to be invaluable when simplifying and formalising ambiguous game-play concepts into finalised design specifications. The elective senior honours' courses in Artificial Intelligence, 3D Graphics and Audio gave me a head start in interacting effectively with other development disciplines. I also found the department's coursework (especially the Honours' Project) requirements flexible enough to adapt them towards my own particular interests. The prevalence of lecturers actively engaged in research also gave me more confidence in the relevance of their teaching. The department had a real community vibe, though its proximity to the Student Union may be (un)fortunate depending on your level of will power! For a career in game design, I'd recommend a general computing degree followed by a specialist postgraduate course as what little you gain in specialist knowledge is more than outweighed by the loss of general development skills / employability. I doubt you'll find many such courses better than those run by Dundee University.

I work in the medical imaging part of the company, and am currently working on a new application in the Voxar 3D application suite. The cool things I have worked on since I joined: Tokai: Application Framework for a blue chip client (I used COM C++) Voxar 3D: Has some pretty amazing things: Vessel Analysis - click two separate points on a vessel (i.e. thorax and vein in a leg) and the application will automatically find the centre and then present a report showing any calcium that is in the vessel allowing the Doctor to then make a better judgement on the operation. Developed using a mix of COM c++ and C++ .NET I currently using extreme developing processes, and use a test first approach. Firstly write a unit test, then write a small amount of production code, then write more unit test etc..., finally write an automated test or get test department to test the functionality manually).

Software Developer, Mobiqa (www.mobiqa.com), Edinburgh
In my current role, I am responsible for developing a system which will run as a portable kiosk enabling the company to redeem electronic barcodes and tickets remotely. The system is being developed in java using the spring framework. Whilst my time at Dundee Uni gave me a fantastic range of skills, it's clear I'll be spending my entire career continuing to build upon the skill set gained through my degree. Even though the computing course was very time-consuming and demanding at the time, with lots of challenging deadlines for projects and exams, it's clear now why the course was designed that way; to reflect how it is in the real world! Challenges included, I am very much liking my job and wouldn't have stood a chance of getting it without the measured combination of theory and practical work taught throughout the course.

Andrew Gibson, BSc Applied Computing (2009)
Information Systems Developer, Rockstar North, Edinburgh
When I started my course at Dundee I never quite knew where I would end up so it comes as quite a surprise to me that I am now working for a renowned games development company with 9 active studios across the world. I work with a variety of technologies including ASP.NET MVC, PHP and jQuery (which keeps the programmer in me happy) while also providing software support to other teams. A lot of the work is done individually but feeding into a bigger project which I work quite well with and it does allow for a bit of flexibility. Rockstar provides a great working environment, good holidays and excellent facilities. My time at Dundee has given me a lot of experience and opportunity that has helped in both my current and past jobs, well worth the time and effort in my book.
Colin Gourlay, BSc Applied Computing (2009)

Stacey Humphries, BSc Applied Computing (2009)
Test Engineer, i2, Cambridge
I made some good friends at Dundee and learned a lot of useful things, some course content was particularly commended at interviews. The School of Computing staff were spot on, and really helped throughout the course. It certainly feels like my time there was worthwhile as two months after finishing the course, I found the above job. It involves testing (and a little development) in an agile development environment, and use of Nunitt (as taught at University of Dundee).
Mark Zarb, BSc Applied Computing (2009)

Coming to Dundee was a very new experience both for myself and most people around me - mostly because most of us had never heard of Dundee prior to the summer of my application, and locally, it is unheard of for people to 'study abroad' without having some experience at our university. However, I had found the perfect degree course, and I decided to try it out - my first big adventure. First of all, I would like to thank the staff and students for being so friendly and welcoming - secondly, I would like to say how much I enjoyed my degree. I had never had a fondness for programming, but everything we did I found to be interesting. Much to my surprise, I have now graduated, and find myself able to do a number of jobs - academi, lecturing, technical, database, website work - none of which involve complex algorithms and data sets! For all of you considering Dundee - DO IT! It will be well worth it.
