orienteering events - where and when?
This page gives you information about where orienteering takes place, and when throughout the year events are held.
Where?
- Most orienteering competitions are held in forested areas. But we also orienteer in country and urban parks, moorland, open hillside, and areas of sand dune.
- Tayside Orienteers hold events all over the region: from Kinloch Rannoch to Carnoustie.
- In Scotland, the best orienteering terrain can be found in the forests and moors of Inverness-shire, Moray, Deeside, Perthshire, and the Trossachs. But enjoyable orienteering can equally take place in the urban areas of Scotland, in city or country parks.
- Elsewhere in the UK, the Lake District and North Wales in particular have some excellent orienteering terrain. In Europe, Scandinavia is the place to go for serious orienteering.
When?
- Orienteering events normally take place on Sundays, with starts usually from around 11am until 1pm. Sometimes you'll find events on weekday evenings, normally Wednesdays.
- The orienteering season is at its peak from March to June and September to November, although it is possible to orienteer throughout the year. In winter, generally low-key events take place, whereas in summer there are a number of major multi-day holiday events around Europe to choose from.
- Major events generally take place in Spring, including the Jan Kjellstrom International Orienteering Festival (JK) at Easter and the Scottish Championships in May/June. The British Championships are also usually in May.
