Organised by Perth and Kinross Sports Development Team (including TAY members Jennifer Williamson and Dave Prentice)
Perhaps word has got round that it is a great morning for both pupils and teachers/parent helpers; perhaps it was the hard work put in by the active schools coordinator and the Perth and Kinross Sports Development Team. Whatever the reason, 73 teams, (each of 3 children), from almost all of the schools in the designated 'Western' area turned up at Glenalmond College on Tuesday 20th, trouncing the previous best attendance of 49 teams. They were rewarded by a day perhaps even better than last year, with the weather cold but sunny, snow-covered hills providing a fine backdrop to the wonderful grounds.
There were performances to match, with Team 5 from Comrie (Craig Paterson, Ruaraidh Henderson, Ruaridh Hogg) showing that lack of originality in naming the team did not equate to lack of talent as far as orienteering was concerned. The team returned in just under the 45 minutes allowed and set a new record of 520 points, just 20 points short of the maximum possible, receiving a shield for their efforts.
The second team home was Aberuthven's only entry, The Three Musketeers, (Conor Moran, Roy Reid, Rohan Beyes) who, with 505 points, scored more points than last year's winning team, also from Aberuthven, a great achievement by a small school. Teams named 'Three Musketeers' seem to have traditionally done well!
After this, a number of teams were separated by just a few points. In third place was Team 4 (Ewen Stewart, Fraser MacLarty, Gareth Gill) from Comrie with 480 points, closely followed by Troublesome Three from St Dominic's, with 475 points. All the team members of the top four teams received free membership of Tayside Orienteers.
Comrie, with Team 3 in 5th place, came out as top school, though Crieff Primary, (who again sent the largest contingent of teams), had five teams qualifying for the final along with Muthill, who have traditionally done well. Auchterarder and Comrie each had four teams qualifying for the final, with Aberuthven, Blackford, Greenloaning and St Dominic's one each. Braco, entering for the first time, had both of their teams in the top half in 31st and 34th places. 22 teams in all will be invited to the finals at Scone Palace on May 15th, along with the leading teams from the other five area finals.
Glenalmond College represented by the deputy head, John Owen, was given a framed map of the college grounds and the neighbouring Cairnies Wood by Dave Prentice of Tayside Orienteers in recognition of the donation given by the college towards producing the new enlarged map.
The Perth and Kinross Sports Development Team who staged the event, thanked the college for hosting another excellent event, the fourth held in the college grounds.
The indications are that the numbers participating in the area finals will again exceed 1000. It probably should be emphasised that the event is all about using maps, working as a team and tackling a challenge. But this can be at whatever level a team wants, and walking round can be great fun, and an enjoyable learning experience, which is what it is all about.
