Results of Perth and Kinross Southern Area Primary Schools Orienteering Championships 2006

The 2006 Perth and Kinross Primary Schools Orienteering Area Championships organised by the Perth & Kinross Sports Development Team got away to a flying start on Tuesday at Perth Riverside with the Southern schools competing. This is the first of a series of six area events organised by the team to be held at the Belmont centre, Dalguise, Glenalmond, and the Riverside culminating in the Perth and Kinross Championship at Strathallan. The area championships alone have attracted 1200 entries this year, a record entry.

The Kinross team Supersonic Seekers (Christopher Salmean, Malcolm Jack, Aaron Lockhart) zoomed round all 27 controls in the excellent time of 35 minutes 26 seconds, significantly beating last year's best time of 44.32 by Craigie's RAF team, though the course last year was a bit longer. It will be a new yardstick for the Perth Area schools when they compete at the same venue on April 21st.

47 teams of three from Abernethy, Blairingone, Dunning, Forgandenny and Kinross competed, some of the Southern schools not being able to make what was an ideal day for orienteering, with sunny, cool weather and a fine backdrop of the River Tay and snow capped hills. There was great enthusiasm from the children, with generally very high scores – we may have to make the courses harder next year! This is perhaps partly down to the ongoing coaching and support provided by the P&K Sports Development team.

Five teams went to all the controls, with four scoring the maximum of 540 points. The fifth team was Fantastic 3, Blairingone's only team, there being just enough pupils at the school to field one team, so this was a truly fantastic achievement. Abernethy took second and third places with Proclaimer Boys (David Hamill, Ryan Dow, Daryn Redford) going round in 40.47 and Juggling Jaguars (Rory Leamonth, Jordan Gourlay, Ruaridh Miller) round in 41.45. Fourth were The Rebels from Kinross, with another four Kinross teams and one from Forgandenny in the top 10 teams. Dunning did not miss out, with two of their teams, Rock on Dudes and Black Lightening qualifying for the finals at Strathallan School on May 11th.

Thanks go to the Perth Riverside Church for making their excellent facilities available and to the teachers and parents at the competing schools. With the record entry of 1200 children for the area championships this year and if the standard matches those on Tuesday, Perthshire schools could do very well at the Scottish Schools Championships which this year are being held at Scone Palace on June 2nd.
