Results of South Primary Schools Orienteering Championships 2007

The winning team lived up to their name 'Fast and Furious' and set a new record time by just 3 seconds at the Southern primary schools orienteering area final held in the grounds of Strathallan School last Thursday. Especially impressive is the fact that one of the previous record-holding team is now in the Scottish squad, and the time beats the best in the Perth and Kinross Final held at Strathallan last year.

There was also plenty of competition. The entry of 76 teams of three was a record for the Southern schools, (though it was boosted by some Perth schools), and the second highest in the 22 area finals held over the last four years. The weather turned dry for the race and the sun came out for the picnic on the grass at the end, as the results were worked out.

The performances were excellent, with two teams scoring the maximum 540 points in the 45 minutes allowed by going to all the 27 controls. 'Fast and Furious', (Rachel Paterson, Catherine Stokes, Holly Martin-Bates), gave Dunning Primary their first win in a time of 31.43. Previous Southern area winners have been Kinross (twice) and Forgandenny. Second, in the fourth fastest time ever recorded were Dambusters (Mathew Kilby, Robert Cairns, Jake Baglow) from Kinross in a time of 34.14.

Four teams were bunched on 520 points, with Forgandenny’s R.T.R.T. (Liam Harrier, Finlay Stewart, David Law) in the lead with a time of 41.14. The next three teams were just separated by seconds. The Punishers from Kinross recorded 43.24; Triple Threat from Viewlands 43.33 and Team 5 from Kinross 43.35. All are offered free membership of Tayside Orienteers. Other notable results were The Fantastic Three from Blairingone qualifying in 17th place, continuing the excellent record of possibly the best little school, and Methven's The Demonators, a team with two P5s and a P6 who finished in 19th place.

In the light of the numbers competing, the top 25 teams have been invited to the Perth and Kinross Final at Scone Palace on May 19th. 9 teams from Kinross qualified, reflecting the considerable commitment from the school to the championships. There were 6 from Viewlands, 3 from Forgandenny, two each from Dunning and St John’s, with one each from Abernethy, Blairingone and Methven.
