Held at Pollok Park, Glasgow, 3rd June 2005
For the first time, teams from Perth and Kinross primary schools competed in the Scottish Schools Orienteering Championships last Friday at Pollok Park in Glasgow and came back with some terrific results. They were up against children from schools who regularly competed, mostly from the west of Scotland, but despite that, scooped two firsts (out of the four classes entered), a third, fourth and fifth place plus some other very good results.
What made it more impressive was that this was the first time most of them had competed in a conventional orienteering event, where teams go off at minute intervals and go to controls in sequence with the winner being the fastest team, as opposed to a ‘score’ event as used in our own championships where teams go to as many controls as possible in a set time and score points.
In the P7 Girls class, the winning team was Annabel Scott and Hannah Logan from Muthill who came first out of 27 entries, completing the 1.7kms course in 12 minutes 13 seconds, half a minute ahead of the second team. Felicity Gordon and Rachel Kenley from Craigie came fourth in 17.18.
In the P7 Boys/Mixed class there were 36 entries and Daniel McKay and Rory Daniel from Inchture came in first on the 1.9kms course in 15.48 with a lead of 15 seconds. In third place, having made one navigational error, were Brodie Hunter and Evie Aitken from Forgandenny, part of the winning team at the Perth and Kinross champs, just a further 36 seconds behind.
Other excellent results were achieved by Anna Seaton and Lauren McIntyre (Viewlands), 5th in the P5/6 Girls, Deanna Smith and Stuart Reid (Hill), 9th in P5/6 Boys/Mixed, with David Neil, Jamie Sutherland (Viewlands), Fiona Milligan, Amy Blyth (Stanley), Alex Donnachie, Gary Lovey (Burrelton), Finlay Gray, Gareth Palmer (Kenmore), Dale Bennett, Callum Klaassen (Inchture) all getting top 10 places. Abernethy was the other Perth and Kinross school to send teams, with Ben Williamson and Robbie Orr finishing in the top half.
All the teams had achieved top results in the Perth and Kinross area championships and the finals at Scone Palace. The Perth and Kinross Sports Development team helped by Tayside Orienteers members organised a coach to take the children to Pollok Park. The cost of the coach was paid Tayside Orienteers, using part of a grant from the Gannochy Trust, encouraging children to participate in sporting activity.
Results for each coures include the winner plus results from Perth and Kinross school pupils. For full results see the Official Scottish Schools Orienteering festival results (on external web site).
