Results of Summer Series 1 (Local Evening Event), at Perth Parks on 27th April 2004

Organiser - Dave Prentice

Although details of the event were sent in good time to the Perthshire Advertiser, they had some computer problems and nothing appeared in Friday's PA. Perhaps that and a couple of heavy downpours before and after 5.00pm contributed to what was a low turnout. However those who did turn up enjoyed the orienteering. (Apologies too to those who were put off by the absence of clear directions to the assembly/start on the web site fixture list: David Sloan)

The idea behind the event was to use the North Inch plus new 1:1500 maps of the Norrie Miller Walk and the Rodney Gardens/Bellwood Park along the east bank of the Tay. By going under and then over Perth Bridge and then using the tunnels under Queen's Bridge, the three areas could be linked without any road crossing. The short course consisted of controls on the North Inch (or as it turned out, the controls in Norrie Miller Walk and Rodney); the long course the 27 controls in all three areas. The two new maps were funded as part of the P&KL schools initiative, surveyed by Dave Prentice, drawn up on OCAD by Jane Anderson and laser printed by Stirling Surveys.

It is the first event held by the club where competitors used three maps, but there were no problems with that and the maps seemed to work fine.

* Tried bike orienteering round the Inch but found map-reading somewhat difficult, and then rode to Rodney - which is rather a good way of avoiding the road running...
