Held at Perth Riverside on 22nd March 2007.
Organised by Perth and Kinross Sports Development Team (including TAY members Jennifer Williamson and Dave Prentice)
Primary schools from Perth competed at Perth Riverside in the second of the primary schools orienteering area finals. With some schools opting to go to one of the later area finals, numbers were down slightly compared with last year, but the standard was significantly up. The area of the map stretches north from Perth Grammar, most of it bordering the banks of the River Tay.
The objective, as with all the other area finals, was to go to as many of the 27 control sites as possible in the 45 minutes allowed. The nine controls furthest away counted 30 points; the easiest nine were 10 points and the others 20 points. In the two preceding years, only one team scored the maximum 540 points, but this year the top seven teams all achieved the maximum, with the fastest team getting round in less than 33 minutes, an excellent performance.
The winning team was Oakbank All Stars (Fraser Todd, Andrew Davis & Stuart Webster) in a time of 32.35. Second and third places went to teams from Craigie Primary, with Going for Gold (Clodagh Mitchell, Hannah Ballantine & Behah Salem-Dalgety) in 36.40 finishing in front of Flying Dutchmen (Ben McFarlane, Paul Collins & Rory Savage) who recorded a time of 39.29. North Muirton Tigers came an excellent fourth in 41.30 with Team X from Our Lady’s fifth just two minutes behind. The other teams to score the maximum points were San Francisco Giants from Oakbank and 003s from Criagie.
Nine Oakbank teams qualified for the final, along with five from Craigie, three from North Muirton, two from Our Lady’s and one from Goodlyburn. It will be the first time North Muirton and Goodly burn have been represented at the final. All were fine performances and the 20th team this year would have finished 7th last year – and this year the course was slightly more difficult! Something must be going right out of map-reading, route choice, teamwork, navigation, fitness, strategy, determination, or even coaching!
The Perth and Kinross Sports Development Team who staged the event, thank the Perth Riverside Church for again allowing us to use their facilities and the Parks department for clearing some of the litter which was spoiling one of Perth’s under-rated open areas. Next year we will try and use ‘The Woody’ to increase the challenge – but there will need to be a walkway built over the muddy access.
Score competition, 45 minutes, maximum possible score: 540 points
