It was great to have a significantly increased turnout for this year's event, and just enough maps (we ordered 60) along with excellent conditions on the day. They were hills that hopefully few of you had been over and just about offered enough legs with route choice to keep you interested.
The initial idea had been to have circuits round Glen Tye (N of the start) finishing at the Wallace Stone, but there was a shortage of control features, the old wall boundaries indicated on the map just not being there, or so faint they were unusable. I may have another look.
I hope I did not overstate the runnability - I tended to feel it was good apart from being rather tussocky towards the finish. I will see if I think differently after bringing in controls today (it was a bad move to hurry back to see the second half of the 'match'). I will check the last control which might have been 100m too far to the NE. If so, the only excuse was that it was the last one visited when I did the round of all the potential sites with my LAMM partner as 'controller' and at that stage my left foot was really painful due I think to an overtight shoe, so my focus was on limping back to the car.
On that note, I hope the two competitors who sustained muscle/hamstring injuries make a quick recovery. The other hard luck story was Dave Scott who, after running the Arrochar Hill Race on the Saturday, did not punch the start! A hypothetical time for the first leg has been put into his splits.
Update from Dave Prentice, Thursday 1st July Sorry about the last control being 100m too far to the NE (verified when bringing in controls). The only excuse is that it was the last one visited on the Thurs before the LAMM when, with my LAMM partner as 'controller', we went round checking potential sites and taping all the chosen ones, and by the time we got to 184 my left foot was so painful, due I think to an overtight shoe, I thought my chances of starting the LAMM let alone completing it were just about zero, so my focus was on limping back to the car. Hopefully no-one lost more than a few seconds - it could be seen from the vague spur just above the correct site.

Join us for the 2010 version of Tayside Orienteers' annual Long Orienteering event on the Ochil Hills!
This year's Long-O event will be based at the west end of the Ochil Hills, with Assembly,
Car parking, registration, download (and recuperation!) at the Sheriffmuir Inn (GR NN827022).
Please note that entrants must be over 18, competent at hill navigation and take part at their own risk.
From the south: turn off the A91 west of Menstrie and Blairlogie or in Bridge of Allan turn off the A9 immediately north of Stirling Uni, and follow signs for Sherrifmuir.
From the west: from the west, follow signs for Sherrifmuir from the roundabout in the centre Dunblane.
From the north: turn left off the A9, following signs for Sherriffmuir just west of Blackford.
The inn is difficult to miss, being the most prominent building for miles around!
Minly open, grassy hills with much lovely running. There are footpaths, sheep trods and quad tracks where the going is very fast, plus some areas of tussocky grass, but much of the running will be over pathless rounded hills above Menstrie and Alva glens with fine views on a good day.
A Harveys 1:25,000 map will be provided to all pre-entrants (see Entry details below.)
Three courses will be available - approximate lengths and climbs of each are as follows:
You must be appropriately clad for high (over 500m) and exposed terrain.
Please carry a cagoule and whistle, and any food or drink you will need during your run.
Courses cross enough streams if you wish to drink from them.
Contact organiser/planner before Jun 25 to guarantee a colour map; pay your entry fee on the day.
Entry on the day will also be possible - there should be enough colour maps, but black and white photocopies will be the fallback option.
Entry fees: Seniors: £6.00. Juniors (aged 18-21) and Students: £4.00.
Registration: 09:30-11.00.
Starts: 10.00-11.30.
The start is 15-20 mins walk and the Finish is 20 mins walk from the inn.
Courses will close at 15.00. (not 15:30 as earlier stated - we suspect some of you may want to go and watch the World Cup afterwards...)
Punching starts.
Electronic SI punching will be used. Bring your own SI card if you have one. Available for free hire if not.
GPS devices may not be used for navigation; however route recording for post-race analysis is permitted.
To reserve lunch at the Sheriffmuir, phone 01786 823285;
Orders from 12.30 to 2.30pm. Selection of main courses priced at under £12.
