The second of the area championships was held at the Belmont Outdoor Centre, Meigle where the North Eastern and some Central schools competed. Whereas Glenalmond might have been in the last throes of Winter, Belmont certainly felt as though Spring had arrived and 47 teams enjoyed a wonderful morning and some very good orienteering performances resulted. Teams from Abernyte, Alyth, Collace, Guildtown, Hill, Luncarty, Meigle, Murthly, Rattray, St Stephen’s primaries competed.
Again competition was close, with just one team, Rattray Rovers getting to all the controls, but coming in just one minute late, so getting 535 points. Second with 530 points was Cranny Grannies from Luncarty in a fast time of 36.48 and third was Bourbons from Hill also on 530 points in a time of 40.58. The top 15 teams at least will be invited to go to the final at Scone Palace and these include teams from Luncarty, Meigle, Rattray, Alyth, Collace and Hill, with Guildtown close to making the cut.
Three more area finals are scheduled for the Perth, Northern and Southern schools respectively. This year, senior schools are to be invited to Scone Palace on May 14th for a senior schools championship, so there should be a very good chance of another successful visit by the top teams from Perth schools to the Scottish Schools Champs on June 5th.
