Report

Beatrix Potter would have been astonished to have witnessed the activity on the 27th March in the grounds of Dalguise House, her Scottish summer residence. Three experienced members of Tayside Orienteers were also astonished by the performances produced by teams competing in the Northern Primary Schools Orienteering Area Championships.

There was an excellent turnout of over 200 children in 69 teams of three, another increase on previous years, with teams coming from as far afield as Glen Lyon and Strone of Cally. A new map of the excellent PGL Dalguise grounds had been commissioned, now extending well up the forested hillside above the house. The area used for the competition was hence considerably larger than that used in previous years, so that the distance to be covered to get to all the 27 control points was longer and the climb involved, also greater. The orienteers who set the course for the Perth and Kinross Sports Development team, who ran the event, were not sure whether any teams would get the full 540 points.

As it turned out, some terrific runs resulted in not only three teams getting the maximum points, but the winning team finishing in a time that was better than the previous two years and close to the record set in 2004.

Pitlochry claimed first place, following wins by Kinloch Rannoch, Kenmore and Dunkeld in previous years. Their top team was Road Runners (Chris Cameron, Patrick Barbour, Tom Muirhead) in a time of 29.44. The second and third teams were both from the Royal School of Dunkeld, with Juganauts (Sean Johnstone, Ciaran Cassidy, Scott Alcorn) powering their way through in 32.42 ahead of The Pork Chops (Ally Wright, Peter Bruce-Wootton, Jamie Robertson) in 29.49. Fourth was The Warriors (Kyle McLauchlan, Ross Colthart, Steven Murdoch) from Blair Atholl, with Flying Snot Wags (Robbie Olivier, James McDiarmid, Michael Nash) from Breadalbane fifth.

The top 22 teams will be invited to the Final at Scone Palace on May 15. Breadalbane will be represented by 7 teams, Dunkeld by 6, Pitlochry by 4, Kenmore by 3, with Blair Atholl and Grandtully each getting one team through.

Kinloch Rannoch's top team, Wild Dogs, came 32nd; the Strone of Cally team were 33rd, Struan's best team Struan Stags 36th; Glen Lyon's team The Macaws 43rd and Straloch's team Straloch Whizzers 61st. Perhaps the most funky team name was 'Freshly Waxed Monkeys on Skateboards' from Breadalbane.

Thanks again go to PGL Dalguise for the use of their excellent facilities and grounds.
