Orienteering can often provide visual as well as mental and physical stimulation and Tayside Orienteers' latest evening event certainly provided all three, especially the former, courtesy of the bluebells in Craig Wood above Dunkeld. Much of the wood was carpeted with bluebells at their best, which gave a great start to the courses. One competitor said it was the best-smelling orienteering event she had ever been to! We should reassure readers that the courses went along the fringes of the bluebells and as usual it will be difficult to see where orienteers have trodden.
The short course joined up with the Fungarth Walk, offering great views to the north, while the medium and long courses wound their way through the birch woodland on the southern flanks of Newtyle Hill, with a fine view over Dunkeld and the Tay valley in the early evening light, which caused more than one dedicated competitor to pause and admire. It is a good excuse to gain breath. Those on the long course had every reason to, having struggled to run through the thick heather on the open part of the hill.
The short course (2.2kms and 75m climb) was won by prospective new member Rosie Aitken in 38 minutes 20 seconds with Laura and Alice Nicol second in 43.00. On the medium course, (3.4kms and 175m), careful navigation paid dividends and Felicity Martin came in first in 48.20 with Elaine Gillies second in 61.00 and Grahame Nicol third in 63.30. Competitors on the long course (5.5kms, 250m) had been warned the going was tough on the upper part of the hill, and were not disappointed. Chris Dibben from The Kingdom of Fife Orienteers took first place in 59.30. Matthew McCullagh from TAY showed his orienteering skills are improving (provided roads are not involved) and that long legs were an advantage by coming an excellent second in 63.20 followed by Davie Frame in 66.15. Less than a minute behind were Ged Keane and Donald Smith.
