Clocks change

British Summer Time starts on the 26th March, so don't forget to put your clocks forward 1 hour!

Getting there

Assembly is at the Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre, south of Comrie.

Grid reference NN788196 (Landranger Map 57); Location of Assembly on Streetmap.co.uk.

Parking

Parking in the Wildlife park car park. Additional parking will be on the access road. There is no parking fee.

Dogs

Dogs on leads in the assembly area please. Dogs will not be able to go to the start/finish as the route partly goes through the Wildlife Park. There is a designated dog walking area off the access road.

Map and Terrain

Map scale 1:10 000, 5m contour interval.

The area is mainly wooded hill-side, with varied runnability. Longer courses go into the open and semi-open areas to the East and West of the main part of the map. Most of the areas marked as "undergrowth: slow running" are reasonably fast as the bracken is right down at this time of year.

Mill of Fortune is generally overgrown and not accessed much by members of the public. As a result, many of the smaller tracks and narrow rides are not obvious on the ground. There are also a number of faint tracks (largely the remains of vehicle tracks from old forestry workings and transient deer trails), which are visible on the ground, but are not on the map. You may also see old direction posts, some of which are associated with "vanished" tracks which are no longer visible on the ground or marked on the map. All walls are overgrown and difficult to see in places.

Of necessity, we have had to use narrow rides and walls as line features for the junior courses, as there isn’t anything else. Parents should make sure that younger children in particular are aware that rides and walls may not be very obvious. The white and yellow courses are in a small, clearly defined area of the map with obvious escape routes and less experienced competitors should be aware in advance what to do if they become lost.

There is an area of wind-blow affecting the straight line route on Courses 11, 12, 13 and 14. This is largely impassable and dangerous. The area will be marked on the map and competitors are strongly advised to go round it.

There are two marked crossing points on a fence crossed by the longer courses. These are NOT compulsory (just easier!) and competitors may cross the fence where they wish.

Some of the steeper slopes become very slippery in wet weather and runners should take care.

Course details are provided in the table below. There will also be a String Course; prizes are kindly sponsored by the Copeland Family at The Handy Shop, East High St, Crieff.
