Short Course | Medium Course | Long Course
I had to plan the courses to take account of a) the various forest activities going on as part of the Kinnoull Open Day, and b) the footpath restoration work. This meant that the options for the short course were limited, and there were too many “path/track” junctions for my liking! We also had to position the start/finish a short distance from the other Open Day activities. While this gave us a wonderful location, it may have reduced the numbers taking part.
There were last-minute problems with the maps – the printer had printed the earlier version and not the updated one. Thanks to Dave Prentice for doing a sterling job of drawing in several features by hand.
Davie Frame and I had some anxious moments when three horses took fright at the sight of a yellow tent flapping in the breeze – fortunately this was before any competitors! Something to bear in mind for future risk assessments!
Two competitors had trouble locating one particular control – possibly because of the control being placed below a spring and not on it – a check will be made.
Problems aside, we couldn’t have wished for a better day weather-wise, and everyone taking part seemed to enjoy the event. There were some excellent times: Davie Frame had a storming run, beating arch rivals Allan Downie and Bill Melville by a clear 16 minutes. Ged Keane, newly returned from Army service overseas, promises to provide the club’s senior men with some fresh competition. Matthew McCullough and Elaine Gillies, both still fairly new to the sport, had their best runs to date.
Martha Aitken deserves special praise for coming first junior in the Long course – a very impressive performance on a challenging course against strong senior competition. Definitely someone to watch in the future!
The Downie family not only had a second equal place in the Long course, but were winners of both the Medium and Short courses.
Several members took the opportunity to try out the pacing courses laid out by Davie Frame, and agreed this had been a very worthwhile exercise – definitely something to repeat in the future.
Thanks to all who helped at the event, and in particular to Davie.
