Held at Glenalmond, 26th April
Organisers - Jane Anderson, Dave Prentice and Ross McMillan (Perth and Kinross Council)
On April 26th, 147 Western school pupils were the guests of Glenalmond College and were able to discover the delights of the extensive grounds. The aim was for teams of three to run to as many of the 27 controls as possible in the 45 minutes allowed. 49 teams competed and enjoyed the facilities, which the college are keen to see other schools come and use (contact the bursar on 01738 842015).
At Glenalmond, there is a large area of grounds and the orienteering is quite challenging for primary school pupils, and no teams scored the maximum number of points.
However, Muthil’s Rainbow Dragonflies (Kirsty Roxburgh, Eilidh Simpson, Hannah Logan) put in an excellent performance and set a new points record of 500 points in 44 minutes 32 seconds. Teams from Crieff primary school came second and third. The girls team, Cool Dudes (Mairi Wilson, Cara Tavendale, Samantha Ashworth) scored 480 points in 43.53 with the boys The Blue Bultaco Sherpa scoring 10 points fewer... though they took 2 minutes less time. Greenloaning Green Eagles (Gary McGlashan, Robyn Horton, Jordan Reilly) came fourth, also with 470 points.
The event was well supported by Crieff, Oakbank (who could not make the event scheduled for the Perth schools), Muthil, Methven, Blackford and Greenloaning schools, with 6 teams from St Dominics unfortunately unable to make it at the last minute.
Score competition, 45 minutes, maximum possible score: 540 points
