Held at Dalguise, 28th April
Organisers - Jane Anderson, Dave Prentice and Ross McMillan (Perth and Kinross Council)
The abiding memories from the fourth of the primary schools orienteering area championships held on Thursday will be the awful weather and the indomitable spirit of the competing children. Plus some fine performances.
It had rained heavily overnight and it just rained and rained through the morning and through the period of the competition. The event was organised by Perth and Kinross Sports Development at the Dalguise Outdoor Centre, near Dunkeld.
The lovely grounds presented more of a challenge than normal, with stretches of the network of paths becoming quagmires, the slopes slippery and the burns rather full.
At least it was dry in the house where Beatrix Potter had stayed as a child, and the 186 children competing as teams of three certainly brought tremendous excitement to the great hall where they were briefed, before venturing outside to brave the elements. They had 45 minutes to go to as many of the 27 controls as possible.
The area was stoically marshalled by teachers, parents and sports development staff. Despite wet feet, and wet just about everything else, there were no mishaps – just a lot of rather muddy clothes – we hope parents weren’t too taken aback when their children returned home.
There was an excellent turnout, up on last year, with teams from Blair Atholl, Breadalbane, (who sent 22 teams, the highest number so far for these championships), Dunkeld, Glen Lyon, Grandtully, Kenmore, Kinloch Rannoch, Logierait and Pitlochry.
From many excellent performances, it was Kenmore who took three of the top four places. The aptly named Red Hot Runners (Kyle James, Chris Carlin, Lewis Lambie) visited all the controls in 45 minutes 50 seconds, scoring 535 points. The Wacky Racers (Tommy Haddon, Breagha Burgess, Finlay Gray) scored 520 points in 39.28 for third place and the Country Runners (Gareth Palmer, Jamie Carlin, Bradley Baird) were fourth with 500 points.
But perhaps the outstanding performance was by the RS Dunkeld team, The Jaguars (Ben MacKinnon, Callum Strong, Grace MacDonald) who raced round in 23.14, well ahead of last year’s good times, but managed to miss one control and hence scored 530 points. It is the hard luck story of the Series to date.
