Controller's Comments

First of all I would like to compliment Davie and Elaine on the impeccable job they did organising and planning the event - the first time either had taken on an event of this size - and it wasn't easy. It ranged from renumbering all the controls, getting the Forestry Commission to clear some of the rides (would you believe), to finding a missing SI unit on Monday afternoon in the dark - no mean feat! The fact the event went so smoothly was also down all the excellent support on the day. So if that scores 10 out of 10, I suppose I score about 3 out of 10 in terms of getting reasonable numbers back within guideline times.

Some of the courses were too long - blue particularly, also brown. Perhaps if some of the VHI competitors had been present, these would have looked better. But the climb and in places, tough terrain should have been factored in more. The course lengths were based on Newtyle and Mill of Fortune. Looking at the split times, a range of controls presented difficulties to different competitors. The knoll at 202 gave problems, but it is interesting to note that two of the youngest competitors (Evie Aitken and Alexander Chepelin on LG) located it fairly quickly.

However we, (or at least I), have to look on the bright side:

value for money in terms of time spent orienteering was the best for many an event (best ever for some?).
there was plenty to talk (complain?) about!
just about everyone found at least one (and in some cases rather more) controls difficult to locate.
though some did not like parts of their course (eg the open hill); others did like the same bits.
the map offers plenty of scope for challenging courses!.
some found their course too hard, but others really enjoyed it despite their exhaustion.
even a competitor who took 140 mins on brown said how much he had enjoyed the course.
a competitor said it was the best green course they had done for a long time.
many competitors should receive an award for perseverance in the face of adversity.
the courses certainly spread out the competitors - on five of the courses (Yellow, Orange, Light Green, Red, Green) the winning time was around a third of the last time (is this a record?).
for future events the longer courses can be made somewhat shorter with the resultant saving in planning effort.
it's a great event centre.
