Report

The winning team was just 40 seconds short of setting a new record for getting to all the controls, but the overall standard was the best ever, with a record seven teams scoring over 540 points, (the previous record was 5), and likewise a record 15 teams scoring 500 or more points. This was despite a lower turnout, with past regular attendees Invergowrie, Inchture and Stanley being unable to attend this year owing to either cost or timetable considerations – we look forward to them returning next year.

We were delighted that Abernyte attended for the first time, and it was good experience for their two teams, most of whom were in Primary 5. The weather was dry for the event and it was dry underfoot, so conditions were good, the rain obligingly staying off until the event was over.

RSJPCA (Scott Smith, Jordan Baptie and Rachel Keehs), from St Madoes led the bunch of teams on 540 points, with a time of 31.50, six minutes clear of their nearest rivals, The Belmont Bees (Bethany Wilson, Cameron Chkraubrty and Christopher Lumby) from RDM in 37.59 and it will be interesting to see if this lead is maintained in the final – this is not always the case. Third was Flower Power (Robbie, Jack and Stuart) from Luncarty in 38.22, with a second Luncarty team, Flaming Fire Bandits close behind in 38.54. The other teams getting the maximum points were The Map Geeks from RDM, and from St Madoes, ACC and The Scotsmen.

Of the smaller schools, Balbeggie P6 came in just ahead of Balbeggie P7 in 23rd and 25th places. The two Abernyte teams came in 28th and 30th, with a very creditable score of nearly 400 points.

The top 15 teams have been invited to the Perth and Kinross Final at Scone Palace on May 19th. Definite qualifiers are 6 teams from Luncarty, 5 from St Madoes and 4 from RDM, with the possibility of more depending on the results at Friday’s NE Schools event at the same venue.
