Black Spout lived up to its reputation and provided a damp evening, despite earlier spells of brilliant sunshine. Nonetheless, everyone seems to have enjoyed the event, and it was good to see people staying on afterwards to chat and exchange experiences. We welcomed a group from Butterstone school, and also local PE teacher, Lorna MacGregor, who very kindly helped to take in controls while having some informal navigation practice for the forthcoming LAMM.
Courses were reasonably short due to the size of the area and provided opportunities for good running, with consequent fast times. Duncan Raitt excelled himself with his fastest time on any event – 16 minutes. Such was his enthusiasm that he went on to 'help' Liz Fraser with part of her Green course – obviously a Junior aiming high! Stuart Reid came in with the fastest time on the Blue course, followed by David Frame who would have been close on Stuart's heels but for a hiccup at the first control. Green and Blue courses dipped down to cross the burn above the Black Spout – always a bit of a nightmare for the planner in case the water rises suddenly – but the recent dry spell had kept the water reasonably low and there were no reports of floundering!
Thanks to everyone for turning out and making all the preparation so worthwhile. Newtyle Hill on 20th May should see some very keen local competition! A special thank you to Davie Frame and David Williamson who stayed on afterwards to help take in controls before the Black Spout owls started hooting!
