Lost property - one yellow and blue lightweight running jacket. If it's yours, please contact the organiser (sloan758 @ gmail.com) to arrange for its collection.
Firstly, thankyou to everyone who came along to support our first event on our new map of Balkello, in an area unused for Scottish Orienteering for many, many years - the Sidlaw Hills. We were lucky to have such a fine day (despite what the Met Office seemed to be promising right up until yesterday), which allowed you all to make the most of the excellent assembly area available to us at Balkello Community Woodland. As usual, the energy I spent detailing the water features near Assembly and their potential risk to young children in the event's risk assessment form was more than matched by the energy spent by said children...playing in the ditch!
Thanks go to all the landowners who kindly gave us permission to use their land, and to the Forestry Commission for allowing use of the car park/assembly area.
I would also like to thank everyone from Tayside Orienteers without whose help in advance and on the day the event could not have taken place, to the many friends of the club who helped out, including Graham Tough, Phil Smithard, Colin Blackburn and Robin Sloan, and to SWOC, INT, ELO, KFO and STAG for the loan of various pieces of equipment. Special thanks as ever to Robin and Sheila Strain for their calm guidance on the computing side of things, making sure that results processing went smoothly; and to Donald Grassie whose advice as controller was always gratefully received. And finally, thanks to Dave Prentice (Planner) for doing so much to move orienteering at Balkello from vision to reality.
I see Balkello and Auchterhouse hills every day from my house, so now I'm looking forward to going back there without having to worry about the string course location or having enough signs for the route to the starts!
After rather a lot of work getting the map and permissions all in place, it was good to see the event run so smoothly in excellent weather. If the weather had replicated one of the days I was taping controls, it would have been somewhat different as the mist would have restricted visibility to 20m so there would have been no possibility of seeing other runners going to controls - something I tried to minimise.
Thanks for the positive comments on what was quite an unusual area - it would have been possible to make all the hill controls pits or depressions! For those with short legs, sorry about some of the heather. I still feel there should be a 'slow heather' symbol for Scottish maps - and perhaps other areas. Also pleased to hear the stile was appreciated, especially as it was originally put in the wrong place (moral - don't trust memory and thanks to Davie Frame for his tolerance). Many thanks also to Donald for supportive suggestions and ensuring all was ok on the day.
I am pleased the lightweight controls worked as taking 20 plus at a time makes an enormous difference. There were, I think, two exceptions where one was broken and one that had been pushed over. The ground in the pits was solid rock so placement was not easy. Course times were generally within guidelines though perhaps I should have found a way to lengthen the Yellow course. In future it should be possible to use car parking at the SW end of the map to provide variation. There are plenty more pits and depressions to explore!
will appear here shortly...
Congratulations to everyone who completed the Puffles' String Course...some more than once!
