The reading group meets roughly weekly throughout the year (summer vacation
included), and typically comprises one or two members of staff and two or
three students. The idea is to read through an important paper or chapter
in Artificial Intelligence, and then meet to work through and understand
the concepts together. Sometimes we follow a chain of papers which build
upon one another, sometimes we examine papers which take (vehemently)
opposing views on a subject, we have been known to work through most of
a book, and sometimes we just read something that
looked interesting.
Recent topics have included theory of formal grammers, knowledge representation, context logic, situation calculus, speech act theory and planning. We're probably looking at Kripkean semantics next. Our venue varies but is typically off campus and usually involves coffee. The group is convened by Chris Reed, whom you should email if you're interested in joining the group. It is an informal gathering, but it relies on two things: that people usually come to more meetings than they miss, and that people have usually spent an hour or so reading the paper beforehand. |
