About The Scottish Disability Team

The creation, by SHEFC, of a Scottish Disability Team, is a major new development in the area of improving provision for disabled students across the sector.

Who are we?

Funded by SHEFC and based in the Division of Applied Computing at the University of Dundee, the Scottish Disability Team (SDT for short) has been formed under the leadership of Paul Brown, Director. The creation of this team enables Paul's previous role as the SHEFC National Co-ordinator for Students with Disabilities to be expanded into activities at a more strategic level.

The Assistant Director of the team, Lucy Foley, is currently the Student Support Officer/Disability Adviser at the University of Aberdeen. She takes on her role as a 60% secondment from this post.

Pamela Brown is appointed as Team Administrator, Christina Costello as Secretary and Professor Alan Newell is the Team's Academic Supervisor.

Meet the SDT team!

What is our role?

The SDT will focus its activities in the following key areas:

  • Delivery of an HE sector DDA Compliance Training Programme.
  • Production for the Funding Councils of a sector-wide disability training and information strategy for the next 3-5 years.
  • Extension of existing National Co-ordination and Development work. (e.g. maintenance of the disability co-ordinators' mailbase, facilitation of national and regional co-ordinators' networks and workshops etc).
  • Setting up and maintaining a website providing resources and links related to HE and disability. In particular, this will cover areas such as policy and legislation, curricular provision, technology and examples of innovative solutions.
  • Supporting institutions and the Scottish Funding Councils in strategic planning and meeting the new Conditions of Grant.
  • Supporting the Scottish Funding Councils on their own strategic planning framework on disabilities.
  • Working with SHEFC on wider issues such as disability-related funding.
