What
- Email and face-to-face two person problem solving scenario in a controlled experimental setting.
- Interactions monitored, data gathered via questionnaire and informal structured interviews with participants.
Why
- Part of a user centred design process with early and continual user involvement.
- To confirm findings from previous research.
- To help define user requirements of software prototype(s) i.e. what features do users think will help them convey emotions and personality and overcome problems such as misunderstandings and aggressive behaviour?
Findings
- Face-to-face was preferred over email.
- Email caused a great deal of frustration.
- Participants acknowledged known problems with email.
- Computer literate people seem to accept them and take them for granted.
