3rd UK Computer Vision Students' Workshop

The BMVC Students' Workshop took place on Friday 2nd September, the day after the main BMVC conference. This workshop has now become a regular feature of BMVC. It gives students in computer vision an opportunity to network and start collaborations at an early stage in their research career. It is single track containing both oral and poster presentations.

Shared Parts for Deformable Part-based Models, Patrick Ott (University of Leeds)

The deformable part-based model (DPM) proposed by Felzenszwalb et al. has demonstrated state-of-the-art results in object localization. The model offers a high degree of learnt invariance by utilizing viewpoint-dependent mixture components and movable parts in each mixture component. One might hope to increase the accuracy of the DPM by increasing the number of mixture components and parts to give a more faithful model, but limited training data prevents this from being effective. We propose an extension to the DPM which allows for sharing of object part models among multiple mixture components as well as object classes. This results in more compact models and allows training examples to be shared by multiple components, ameliorating the effect of a limited size training set. We (i) reformulate the DPM to incorporate part sharing, and (ii) propose a novel energy function allowing for coupled training of mixture components and object classes. We report state-of-the-art results on the PASCAL VOC dataset.

Facial point detection in visible and thermal imagery, Brais Martinez (Imperial College London)

This talk refers to the problem of facial point detection in still images. It is a very important task for, among others, face analysis applications and for the field of Human-Computer Interaction in general, yet it is a very challenging and still unsolved problem. In this talk I will refer to our latest research on this topic, which includes facial point detection both in visible and thermal spectrum. We will present a set of different approaches to point detection, under the common aim of combining local and global information. Local information is extracted to obtain characteristic local texture patterns, and global information is used to restrict the detections to anthropomorphically consistent configurations..

Oral presentations will be 20 minutes long including questions (15 mins for talk, 5 mins for questions). A computer will be available for those presenters without their own laptops.

Posters should normally be A0 (landscape). Velcro pads and pins will be provided for affixing posters to the display boards.

Workshop registration is free to UK students and BMVC registered participants.

Instructions for Authors

Submission of papers is by email to bmvc2011 at computing dot dundee dot ac dot uk. Please send your submission from your official University email address, cc your supervisor and use the subject line "Student Workshop Submission". Include the name and contact details of your supervisor in the body of the email. Please note that the attachments to the submission email are limited to 10MB. In case you need to send us larger attachments, please let us know in advance.

By submitting a manuscript to the workshop, the authors guarantee that it has not been published previously (nor accepted for publication) in substantially similar form. Violation of any of these conditions will lead to rejection.

Formatting instructions

The format of the papers is the same as for the main BMVC 2011 conference. However, please note that the review process is not double blind so submissions do not need to be anonymised.

The length should not exceed 9 pages excluding the author list and references (i.e. measured from the top of the abstract to the top of the reference list. Any appendices must precede the reference list.)

Typesetting should preferably be done using the PDFLaTeX system (part of all modern LaTeX distributions). However, submissions prepared in Microsoft Word or OpenOffice will be accepted and should be submitted for review in PDF. Please use the templates provided:

Frequently asked questions

Q. When I compile the example paper it looks strange/ the figures don't appear / it appears shifted towards the top right of the page. What is wrong?
A. It sounds like you are compiling the paper with LaTeX. Instead you should compile with PDFLaTeX which will resolve all of these problems.

Q. Is there a Microsoft Word template?
A. Yes. Authors are encouraged to use the LaTeX template. However, submissions prepared in Microsoft Word will be accepted.

Supplementary Material

Authors can optionally upload supplementary material, which may include:

BMVC encourages authors to submit videos using an MP4 codec such as DivX contained in an AVI. Also, please submit a README text file with each video specifying the exact codec used and a URL where the codec can be downloaded.

The authors should refer to the contents of the supplementary material appropriately in the paper.

Venue

The workshop will take place in the School of Computing's Queen Mother Building.

Call for Papers

Students studying in the UK were invited to submit full-length high-quality papers of which the main author was a student. All papers will be reviewed and selected for either oral or poster presentation. All accepted papers for the workshop will be digitally published separately from the main conference proceedings.
