Gemma Webster selected for the British Science Association ‘Perspectives’ scheme
Posted: 19/08/2009
Gemma Webster, a PhD student from School of Computing, is one of thirty-six researchers to be selected for the British Science Association ‘Perspectives’ scheme at the 2009 British Science Festival held at the University of Surrey, where she will explain her scientific work to the general public.
Gemma’s proposal was based on her PhD research project to create a touch screen to help people with dementia to enhance their communication with carers more efficiently and effectively.
It is a known fact that people with dementia living in care homes are often confronted with communication difficulties. This can seriously harm their welfare and wellbeing. The School of Computing in the University of Dundee, one of the pioneers on assistive and healthcare technologies, has led and conducted many highly regarded projects in this field, with a particular emphasis on ethical and social issues that computer scientists face.
‘Perspectives’ is founded by a UK research council to provide an opportunity for postgraduate and postdoctoral scientists, engineers and social scientists at the beginning of their careers to develop skills in discussing the social implications of their research.
