The purpose of the Manchester workshop is to develop a number of research themes which we will put to EPSRC for the future research needs for inclusion in the digital economy. The final product from the network will not be research proposals as such, but will lay out the background from which individuals and/or groups would be able to develop a research proposal.
I was hoping that these themes would be cross cutting and not focussed on a particular sector.
We currently have four possible cross cutting themes, but I am happy to receive other suggestions
- Transitional Assistive Technology - see paper given by Kevin Carey at York.
- Access Technology
- Inclusive Participatory Design
- Technological design for the "terrified"
In parallel with developing a research agenda we will be looking into how we can illustrate the challenges which this research is addressing. We will do this in conjunction with a film maker who will listen to our discussions with the aim of producing a small number of relatively short scenarios which illustrate the challenges this research is addressing in a powerful (and if possible humorous) way. He will then go away and write a number of playlets which will be presented either live and/or in video form at the final conference - the videos will also provide a useful educational resource for inclusion in the digital economy,
Please let Paula know which theme(s) you are particularly interested in, or suggest other themes. The final decision about the themes and the groups to develop them will be made at the Manchester workshop
