Vision-based Internet Software Platform for the Applied Tracking of Humans

Introduction

VISPATH

Computer vision systems for automatically detecting, tracking and recognising the activities of humans have been developed for which the only items of hardware necessary are the ubiquitous PC and camera. These use state-of-the-art algorithms that share a common mathematical framework based on probabilistic sampling schemes and generative models of articulated body structure and learned visual appearance. Effective real-time human tracking on a PC at the level of detail required by many applications is only now becoming possible in software. The technology is low cost, contact-free and non-intrusive: users do not wear any special markers, gloves or clothing.

This project aims to prove the concept that an integrated, extensible software framework based on overarching mathematical principles will yield a technology platform that enables rapid deployment of an exciting range of commercial applications. Furthermore, this project seeks to demonstrate the potential of deployment and intelligent redeployment over the internet and its benefits to end-users.

Primary applications are in the creative industries and include computer games, sports, installations, human computer interfaces and technology for the hobbyist and education.
