We have created an online module to provide you with the basic skills required to produce, design and develop computer programs in Java. Topics include users and requirements, objects, the Java language, statements, operators, inheritance, program control, arrays, collections and packages - and a project to demonstrate your understanding of all of these.
If you are considering studying for a computing-related degree at the University of Dundee and wish to apply for Advanced Entry, then this opportunity could provide you with a real head start.
You should be studying (or have studied) Advanced Higher or A level Computing, or an equivalent qualification which includes programming.
Where & when? The module runs several times each year - typically starting in Autumn, Spring & Summer, and lasts for 10 weeks. If you live close enough, we may invite you to attend the University for an introductory meeting at the beginning of the session. BUT this is an online module, and everything you need will be sent by post before you start, or else available online via the Internet. You can work in your own time, at school or at home, and you will be fully supported by a university tutor via email, discussion boards and web conferencing. Subject to sufficient numbers, the next runs of Java Online are scheduled to start:
To give us time to get you registered we must receive your completed applciation form no later than a week before the modeul start date. How much does it cost? The cost of the module will be £195. There may be scope for using an ILA (Individual Learning Account) to fund this. If Java Online is a requirement to be taken by a student who is an applicant to direct entry into 2nd year for a University of Dundee degree and who is not eligable for ILA funding then only an admin fee will be charged. How should I apply? You may have been asked to apply for Java Online as a condition of an offer at the University of Dundee, or you may be just interested in joining. In either case, application forms can be downloaded from here: as a Word document or as a PDF file. Please send your completed application form to:
If you require a University of Dundee student card then please include a passport sized photograph. |

You will also be awarded with a University of Dundee Certificate of completion, which includes the award of 20 SCOTCAT points at SCQF level 7. This may have been one of the conditions of your offer of an advanced entry place. If you prefer, you can still choose to go into 1st year of our degrees.
