Support for Dementia

Designs computer software, tools, and products that help older people benefit from technology.

We have been developing information technology systems for older people for over 25 years. A unique blend of professionals, including computer scientists and engineers, psychologists, therapists, special education teachers, and others contribute to our interdisciplinary focus.

Researchers in the Queen Mother Research Centre have been recognized with prestigious awards including an MBE, prizes from the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the British Computer Society, and best paper awards at several international conferences. Among our researchers are two Winston Churchill Travel Fellows, a Scottish Power sponsored Research Fellow and two Royal Society of Edinburgh - Lloyds TSB Fellows for Technology and Older People. Invited keynote lectures have been given in Europe, US, China, Egypt, Canada, and Japan.

Our researchers publish widely, have won many prizes for their work, and license their outcomes to commercial companies in the UK, Europe, US, and Japan. They receive funding from the UK Research Councils and charities, as well as European, Japanese, and US councils and institutions. Our researchers were the only non-North American group to be awarded research funds from the Alzheimer's Association of American/Intel Corporation Initiative. Members of the group advise the Scottish Government on their strategy for an ageing population and the British Government on e-inclusion strategy. A new initiative is to further the engagement of older people as research collaborators through theatre-based techniques.

A breakthrough in communication for people with dementia has been achieved by members of this group in collaboration with colleagues from Design in Dundee and Psychology at St Andrews. A spinout company is being established to bring the results of this research to a world-wide market.
