Darwin’s Plants

During his voyage on the research ship Beagle (1831 36) Charles Darwin (1809-1882) collected about 1,000 plants. The majority of these are stored at the University of Cambridge herbarium. These priceless artefacts are not on general display and, whilst they are theoretically available for researchers around the world to study, the mechanics of getting the researchers to the plants often, in practice, precludes such research.

The School of Computing is currently involved in a project to make these plants available (in digital form) to not just to researchers but to anyone with a browser.

This ongoing research work is part of a joint venture with the University of Cambridge.
