Digital Interactive Television for Older People

The primary aim of the research is to gather the requirements to design a TV-based multimedia application that can support older people in their home environment. In more detail, the research is focused on the development around an 'interactive scrapbook' concept, a method where older viewers can collect and 'discuss' different types of digital media, all via their digital television. A significant percentage of the project will focus on reviewing the technical implementation of such a system, in view that iDTV production techniques and hardware specification are substantially different to PC based technologies. Preliminary stages will centre on small focus groups and individual interviews to foster and conceptualise early ideas for the 'communication aid'. This will be followed by longer, more substantial periods of iterative prototype testing and questionnaire/interview studies, with a key focus on user-centred and user-sensitive design methodologies.
