Olusegun Bright - MSc in Computing with International Business
Having successfully completed my Computer Science (Technology) degree at Babcock University in Nigeria, I decided to pursue a Master's degree in a course that would best fuse all my knowledge in computing with my business intentions and aspirations.
Computing with International Business at the University of Dundee turned out to be the right course for me; the hands-on approach and a nice blend of real-life IT industry professionals with 'cool' semester projects made it all well worthwhile.
The whole MSc experience has left me with strong friendships, the know-how and a new outlook on the business opportunities available in the market.
I am currently back in Nigeria and have set up an IT company; tapping into the vast opportunities I now realize have always been around.
Ildiko Pete - MSc in Applied Computing
Before coming to Dundee I studied International Communication in Budapest. Coming from a non-IT related background, I spent a long time looking for the perfect opportunity that would allow me to realize my plans of gaining valuable knowledge in the field of IT.
The Applied Computing course perfectly fulfilled this requirement and provided me an excellent way to obtain relevant skills. The institution's focus on research was also highly beneficial throughout the course, as it ensures that students get insight not only into well-known areas of computer science but into newly emerging studies which will shape tomorrow's world.
The course did not only provide me solid knowledge, it allowed me to work and study in multi-cultural teams, where the members have diverse backgrounds. Therefore I have gained so much, not only professionally but also personally, and I can say that I spent an exceptionally good year in Dundee.
Having just finished the course, I am confident that I have the perfect foundations to start a career in IT.
Arman Doskaliev - MSc in Computing with International Business
I came from Kazakhstan to do my MSc degree in Computing with International Business at University of Dundee from 2008 to 2009. I remember when I first time arrived to Dundee I was pleasantly surprised with sunny weather after all the rumours I heard how Scotland was grey and cold. However I couldn't even imagine that it was only a small piece of impression of many which were awaiting me in the future. During one year at University of Dundee at School of Computing I met a lot of friends from different countries which helped me to exchange my experience and start thinking wider. It was pleasure for me to gain the knowledge and take the lectures from high qualified professors and lecturers of University of Dundee. Guest lectures of people from industry, doing research on projects, always approachable and careful staff this all was so brilliant and worthwhile. If I would have a chance to return back the time a thousand times, I'm definitely sure that I would choose time and again the School of Computing at University of Dundee.
Christine Wang - MSc in Applied Computing
I graduated with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Still with a thirst for knowledge, I decided to proceed with a postgraduate degree. I've always been interested in IT, and how it allows humans to be synergised with technology, so I applied for the MSc in Applied Computing.
My experience with the MSc course has been an accomplishing one. Meeting new friends, learning new subjects have all been a good experience. The vast diversity of the class, in culture, lifestyle, etc. is certainly refreshing, and I learned a lot from them.
Currently, I am working as a Design Engineer in Renesas Semiconductor (Malaysia) (formerly known as Hitachi Semiconductor). My work involves testing new IC chips designed by Renesas. The extensive study and practice of computer programming during the MSc has been immensely helpful to my line of work.
Looking back, the wealth of knowledge and experience I gained from the course have been tremendous, not just academically, but in making lots of friends as well.
Debora Kagohara - MSc in IT and IB
I am from Sao Paulo in Brazil, and I did a first degree in psychology at Griffith University, in Australia, where I had some experience with programming. I wanted to learn more, so I came to Dundee to do the MSc in IT and International Business. The work was challenging but very enjoyable and the lecturers and tutors were always at hand if I needed help. The degree was not only a good learning experience but I also met great people.
I will soon start a PhD in disabilities research at Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand, where the knowledge I have gained from the MSc will allow me to develop new technology to support communication for people with learning difficulties.
Stefan Binder - MSc in Applied Computing
I studied Biology/Botany at the University of Vienna and used to work in Scotland in a plant micropropagation laboratory. I had some training and experience in networking, coding, and database design before starting the MSc Applied Computing course.
The course itself was packed with a good range of subjects, some of which I had not encountered before. For me personally, it was a great opportunity to close gaps in my knowledge and to attain a computing degree rather quickly. The course was very well coordinated.
After the course I started working as an IT Consultant for a group of companies located in Scotland and England. My Applied Computing MSc training often enables me to resolve problems that other IT professionals - with "industrial" qualifications - would not even try to tackle.
Minh Pham - MSc in ICS
I graduated in Computer Science in Vietnam in 2006. After some industrial experience in software development, I decided to go to Dundee University for further study. The MSc in Intelligent Computational Systems was my choice as I am particularly interested in Intelligent Agent technology.
With limited knowledge of studying in a new environment, it was a bit of a struggle at first, but people in Computing school, especially the lecturers were very kind and understanding, and always supported me to get used to the new method of study here. I completed the course by the end of September 2008 with my MSc project about argumentation. This really helped me to understand how academic research works, especially participating regularly in Research Group meetings. It was such a delightful time!
Jane McGowan - MSc in Applied Computing
I came to the Applied Computing department with no IT experience at all. My first degree was in History and I had spent four years teaching English abroad. I wanted to move into a new career and the MSc course was everything I had hoped for. It was very intensive and practical, so when I graduated a year later I felt prepared for a job in the IT industry. I have worked in computing ever since, in Scotland and the USA. I am now a software developer for JP Morgan investment bank, working in their European Technology Centre in Glasgow.
Bill Clark - MSc in Applied Computing
I was a mature student when I took the MSc in Applied Computing, having worked in electronic design. Over the years the software element of electronic projects had become increasingly important and I felt it was time to improve my software skills.
Since graduating in 2000 I have been with Intelligent Finance, an on-line/telephone bank based in Edinburgh. I have worked on the development of systems which automatically generate customer correspondence such as statements and legal documents. These systems use XML/XSLT technologies, currently an area of great technical interest and innovation, especially when interfaced with database systems.
I am grateful for the training in the fundamental principles of software engineering in the MSc course. This allowed me to make an immediate contribution to the development effort on joining Intelligent Finance, and to continue to advance professionally.
